Yep, it’s fair to say that teaching our children in the past year has had its highs (and lows!).
And while we’re not sure our kids have learnt much, we definitely have.
Here are just some of the things we’ve realised on the homeschooling journey so far …
1. Teachers are angels
Our child is not.
Although …
2. Our child is an A-grade student
In negotiation skills that is.
Every day feels like the battle of (parent) teacher v child. You want your child to do their work. They wants to play on their PS4.
Which means a daily bartering session of how many hours they have to work before they can play video games.
Every. Single. Day.
3. We have a serious crush on the PE teacher
Aaah, Joe Wicks. How would we survive homeschooling without him?
Watching Joe in his workout gear is pretty much the only thing keeping us going tbh.
4. Snacks are an actual curriculum topic
Well, they must be given how often our child talks about them.
If only they showed as much interest in English and science lessons!
5. We have no patience …
… and get very excited by any interruption that gives us temporary relief from homeschool battles.
Is that the doorbell? Postman? Amazon delivery? Someone help!
6. The (home) school day is very short
Remember the normal school day of 9am-3pm. Ha!
If your child is in reception, you’ll have discovered very quickly that they have the attention span of a flea. Meaning even 10 minutes of reading or phonics is a win.
7. We remember NOTHING from school
‘Mummy, what year was the Great Fire of London?’, ‘Mummy, how many planets are in the solar system?’ Ummm …
There’s nothing quite like homeschooling to make us realise we’ve forgotten everything we learnt when we were at school. Thank god for Google.
8. We’d definitely fail an Ofsted inspection
It’s been a loooong term, and it’s only just started! And even though we’ve tried our hardest, we’re pretty sure our homeschool efforts ‘require improvement’.
Probably because of all the extra inset days we’ve given ourselves. Oops.
9. Some parents really LOVE homeschool
… and even ask for more work.
We can barely get our little monster to listen to the first exercise let alone do extra. Grrr.
10. Every day is like groundhog day
The same good intentions, the same bribes, the same glass of wine at the end of the day (for you, not them obviously!)
Bonus points if you’ve not asked your child at least 100 times, ‘Do you behave like this at school?’
And who’s threatened to call the headteacher at least once a day? Just us?
11. We can’t wait for half term
Although quite how we’re going to cope until then is, quite frankly, a mystery.
